[He looks up, into Luca's eyes, and he will see-

A much younger Omi, maybe 10 or 11 at best, sitting at the riverside. He's curled up on himself as the sun begins to set. I wonder how my dad and brothers are doing right now. I wonder if they’re hungry.

But they’re always saying they want pizza, so maybe they just ordered that. Was everything he tried to do to keep his family together pointless?

If he sent out for dry cleaning instead, they wouldn't have wrinkles, and store-bought food would be better than anything a child could make.

Here he is. Running himself ragged to the point he stopped doing the things he wanted to do. He can't even remember the last time he spent time with his friends instead of desperately trying to keep his household together.

His father can't do it in the state he's in. Omi's the oldest. He needs to do this, doesn't he? His mind is spinning, the sun is fully gone. The memory fades out as he falls asleep right there in the cold.]

Luca didn't know what to expect, but it's not that. And as soon as the memory ends, his gaze goes soft.]

Is that why you cook and take care of everyone so much?

[That's so fucking sad, he's already reaching over to cover one of Omi's hands with his.]

[He looks uncomfortable with sharing that- maybe he would've on his own, if anyone had asked why he is the way he is. Either way, being forced to share things this way isn't great.

But he doesn't flinch away from Luca's hand.]

... Yeah. It's what I know how to do best. Probably the thing I've been doing the longest too.

[He'll leave it there then, his offer of comfort.]

I'm sorry. I never did stop to really talk with you before, did I?

[He feels kind of shitty about that now. They've banged so many times and yet they barely talk.]

I was really young then, you know? My little brother said he wanted to eat Mom's cooking instead of mine the day before.

I understood why, he missed her. He loved her.

[But for a 10 year old just doing his best, it felt like nothing he was doing was worth it.]

What a little thing to set off a reaction like running away.

He missed her, but you couldn't be her. And you shouldn't have to be. It's no wonder you ran away.

Nobody ever could be.

... I was really trying. My father was barely functioning. If I didn't step up, I thought our family was going to shatter.

[ There's a little bit of a shudder. He already lost his mother, he can't lose the rest of them too. ]

You did your best. Nobody can fault you for that. But there's only so much a child can do.

[He lets him, but he also doesn't quite meet his gaze.]

I don't want to make... They did apologize for making me do all the housework after I came back.

Even so, you had to grow up so fast, didn't you? Have you at least had a chance to be your own person, besides the chores and the house-minding?

[He thinks it's obvious enough that he'll simply skip over that first question.]

I did decide to be an actor. That had nothing to do with my family.

[Okay, his look softens a bit when he hears that.]

I'm doing my best. I think I'm improving with every performance.

[He pats Omi's cheek a couple times before pulling his hand away.]

How about telling me about some of your other interests too, hmm?

Let's see... I like felting and knitting. Molecular gastronomy is interesting, but you really need the right equipment for that. I took up photography while I was still in high school and I've kept at it ever since.

[notaccurate]

That is quite the range of things to take interest in. But, ah, photography?

[Of course Luca is most interested in that one, photography in his time is much more of a science than an art.]

It's nice getting to capture a moment in time.

We have those polaroid cameras from the boxes, but I also have the one I came here with.
