Yep. When a player chooses a route, every other character becomes less and less important. So when that happens, Aoi will step back.

But... wouldn't other characters be important to each other?

Sometimes cross-route friendships develop, but when the plot really kicks in, they tend to get sidelined.

Including the whole cast in every storyline would slow things down too much. It would just be distracting.

Besides that, it would be hard to think of what to do with this many characters while still telling a unique story for each route.

People are all different. Even if the story is similar, the details will be unique.

There would be no point in picking a character and playing their route if it doesn't focus on them and the people closest to them.

Even if you don't focus on somebody, there are other people here who might.

Visual novels aren't usually multi-player. Even gacha-games are still a mostly single-player experience.
