One can track down the spells of others, for one. If this was the deed of someone else meaning to rend us vulnerable the night before, I could be able to tell at least what kind of spell it was, and who it may have come from.
I've never been possessed, so I don't have anything to compare it to. The closest thing... the last time I blacked out, it was from alcohol. I didn't have any memory of what happened.
